Most of the time when we're shooting we want to achieve to optimum sharpness that we can for any given image. But sometimes being out of focus can produce wonderful shots.

One of our longtime members, Chad, apparently read my mind on this upcoming challenge when he shared this image of glistening highlights on the water intentionally out of focus:

These types of images can become easily become abstract works of art as you can see.

So... an unusual challenge. Figure out how to create a powerful image where nothing is in focus. Look for colors and shapes. Capture a mood. Be creative.

    The rules:

    1. Only photos taken during the challenge period should be posted.
    2. Limit of 2 pictures per post for this topic.
    3. Discussion of technique and/or inspiration is encouraged!
    4. Remember - this is NOT a contest - no voting, no prizes - other than better photos!

Have fun - take pictures - use creative focus!

As I sat watching the flames of a bonfire last night, this challenge came to mind. To get them out of focus I slowed the shutter speed down and then moved the zoom out as I took the picture. I hope they fit the challenge.

Hm, this is harder than I thought it'd be. I tried some unfocused "normal" pictures under direct light and under flat light that were mainly about composition and color but they didn't work. These are hand-held reflections in a window, of the Cochranton Fair

These are COOL, Bill. I love this idea and I'm gonna have to try it !!
From the sounds of it, thinking "out of focus" ain't easy.... should be fun.

    Thanks John

Bill I think you chose the most difficult aspect of this challenge - taking normal things out of focus as opposed to taking a pattern (like fire) out of focus. I really like what you've done with it. At first I liked the 2nd one best, but after a second look I like the mood of the 1st one.

I think Marie's 2nd fire shot and Bill's first window reflection are both outstanding!

Nobody said it was gonna be easy! :P

Thanks Dane! And you're right, this may be one of the hardest challenges yet, I've really got to do some thinking to get another one.

I've just never been able to wrap my simple brain around different artistic interpretations like this. It just doesn't make sense to me. I can't get past not having at least a small portion of the image in focus, something for the eye to focus on. About the only thing I can understand is Dane's first image, only because I'd use it as a texture to add a little bit of interest to an image. I guess I just need to give this some more thought.
