There are several approaches to the idea of conveying motion in a static photograph. We're surrounded by opportunities to capture motion in our photography - here are a few hints to get you started...

Freezing Motion - Pretty much the only way to do this is with a fast shutter speed. How fast depends on the speed of your subject, but try 1/500 sec. for starters, assuming you have enough light. Bump the ISO if you have to. A fast lens is good to have as well to gain that desired shutter speed.

Panning - Panning is a technique that moves the camera with the subject to "freeze" the subject while creating that nice, motion-blurred background. Commonly seen in motorsports and a good technique to use when your subject is moving rapidly. The key to this technique is PRACTICE!

Motion Blur - can be used creatively on it's own apart from the panning technique. Keep the shutter speed slower intentionally. Try 1/30 sec. as a starting point.

Using Flash - In low light situations, indoors or out, if you can get close enough to your moving subject, a flash can help freeze the action as well as allowing a higher shutter speed.

Anticipate - Understanding what is about to happen and anticipating an action can help you be ready to capture your shot when the time is right, regardless of technique employed. If you can, follow the subject in your viewfinder even before it's in shooting range.

We are a world constantly in motion, and as photographers, we have the opportunity to record infinite slices of time. For the next two weeks, while you're out shooting, look for opportunities to capture and convey motion.

    The rules again:

    1. Only photos taken during the challenge period should be posted.
    2. Limit of 2 pictures per post for this topic.
    3. Discussion of technique and/or inspiration is encouraged!
    4. Remember - this is NOT a contest - no voting, no prizes - other than better photos!

Have fun - take pictures - capture motion!

Time exposure, camera on dashboard on wet US13. This works really well with lighted signs and buildings, and traffic lights. It's best if someone else drives while you work the camera! This is an old shot, but it seemed to fit the challenge; will try to come up with something new.
