    Interesting thread and I thought I'd give GIMP a try since I've been hearing about it for years.

    Downloaded it, installed it, opened my first TIFF file and...

    Fail. Did a bit of web searching for 16 bit image manipulation in GIMP, found it's earmarked for release 2.10 (current 2.6). Uninstalled.

    being a bit thick but can anyone give me a step my step instruction on how to extract an object from a photo and put it on a plain background? please x

    I assume you are referring to Photoshop Elements, which although not free, costs less than the full standard Photoshop.

    Anyone who has used this care to comment on it? I'm considering buying it.
