    Advice on how to improve

I'd like to get some feedback on this portrait I did. I"m just starting to take photography a little more seriously and this is my first attempt.

    Thanks,
    Maggie

I like the photo. But you'll probably hear that it needs fill light and that its a little under exposed. Thats the problem asking for advice. Your going to hear every kind of you should haves from all aspects of the photo. If you like it. And if you shot the photo for someone and they like it well thats all that matters. In time you will learn what your photos need. And you will learn how to correct them. In the mean time try to eccept criticizm no matter how harsh it might seem.

You have handled the basics very well, particularly the detail in the hair and insuring its separation from the background. It is not underexposed, but you do need a little more fill light on the shadow side of the face. Straightening the angle of the head a little would bring more attention to the eyes. I would also try through posing and camera angle to de-emphasize the space between the two front teeth.

If you are beginning to take photography more seriously I would also recommend that you study up on postprocessing portraits on the computer.

Be careful to avoid camera shake when zoomed right in, as tiny movements in your hands become magnified.
