This is probably a very simple, basic question so sorry if it's been covered before (I searched but couldn't find this particular problem).

I simply couldn't get my T2i to take a picture of stars. I was in manual mode, with various aperture / ISO settings, and the camera just refused to even try to take a picture. When I hit the shutter button half way, it attempted to focus, but all it saw was pure black. When I pressed the button completely it tried one last time to focus and gave up. This is regardless of how many seconds I set the exposure for. It's like the camera decided it couldn't see anything so it wasn't even going to try

am I missing something completely obvious???

thanks, so if the camera is on manual focus it'll take the picture regardless of what it 'thinks' it sees? damn that was easy... thanks!!

Stars are very dim so you would have to put the camera on a tripod and expose for minutes to get an image and then you would only get star trails. What are you trying to get? A picture of a constellation?
