    [attachmentid=8685]Hi photorover,

    That is probably as close a guess as anyone will get. I call them FROST SPHERES. I found and photographed several of them on my lawn in Dec 2003 and have not found anyone else that has seen anything like them. I have contacted physics professors,CalTec,weather service people etc. etc. No luck for ideas as to how or why they formed. If anyone else ever sees any of these I would like to hear about it. I have searched the net off and on but no luck. Unexplained phenomena I guess. Here is a close-up of the double and a large single one.

    Ah, Rob. That is very close -- I knew this would be too easy!

    They are ore loading chutes -- but no water or panning involved in this process.

    The raw material is crushed fine, run across vibrating screens, allowing the heavier particles (gold, lead, and zinc) to fall and separate from lighter minerals. Final processing involves exposing the sifted metals to a cyanide bath to separate it from peripheral rock, and then it is (s)melted at extremely high temps to purify, and cast in molds.

    This mine has not operated for decades.

    Hi Gail,

    Yes, those are frost that formed spheres somehow. There were several on my lawn that morning, never seen before or since. Temp was only about 26 F that night. Haven't found any reports of anything like them anywhere. Very mysterious.
