That's just how Chinese present the table. Everyone grabs food from all of the different dishes with chopsticks almost eating out of the different dishes. Of course there are serving spoons to put a small amount of food over your rice.

'Tis the same in a Chinese restaurant in Britain. Although, this really Westernised Chinese food, not the traditional Chinese diet, which is much healthier, with little meat or sugar.

I don't eat the westernized chinese food anymore except eggrolls and I think that they do eat that in China too, they just don't eat a lot.

I eat more traditional Chinese which is typically steamed in Cantonese cooking.

It's terrible but when I was growing up in California my idea of Chinese food was stale Chung King egg noodles covered in Chung King canned sauce and bad rice that was dry because it wasn't cooked with enough water and smothered in salty Chung King soy sauce. Yuck! Can you believe we ate that way? People in China that we considered poor and third world (and Communist, etc, etc) were living it up.
