This is a discussion on IR Questions within the Filters forums, part of the Photography Tips category; Hey all I'm also new to IR photography I have a Hoya Filter but what would you say is the main things to study on ...
What settings did you use for that first shot? Exposure time, etc.

Well firstly you need a longer expsure, try about 8 seconds and exposure to compensate, the reason is that most sensors have an IR filter coating on them (ie a coating to block IR) to get round this you need a longer expsure to let the IR get through. This makes IR restrictive using a R72 filter becasue you are reliant on calm windless days.
But it can be done and if you check through the IR thread you should see some results, just search for R72
