    I have no clue!

Is it something relating to flash / lighting?

It's pretty. In an antique way. =)

Is it the box they used to re-load the Brownies??

I'm afraid these answers are not correct. But good guesses.

    Off the wall guess..

Was it used for aerial photography? I could picture a balloon on top, camera inside pointing down and a cord attached to the loop on the bottom side of it to pull it up and down? hah. Hey, it'd work! And maybe the lil hole on the side fed wires that helped trip the shutter while in the air.

Or maybe the lens attached to the top or bottom half and something was inserted in the middle of it for something?
Or maybe it has nothing to do with attaching / using the camera itself at all. Like PetPirate said, maybe it's for film or something to put in it.

    Ahhh, I dunnoooo! hehe

Good to see you back Matt.

The answer is not correct and the device is smaller than you are thinking. It's approximately 7"x4"x4" in size.

We'll give it a little more time and see if anyone has the correct answer.

For anyone into photography before say 1990, it shouldn't be too difficult.

    Aw man.
    In 1990 I was 8 years old.

Although, I was interested in photography back then. but it was a low interest, and was mainly with my dinky 110 film camera. So I have no clue what this could be. hehe.
