for $500 you can get something like used D70 or D80, which will work with your lenses, but I'd recommend to get D90, so save up a bit more.

Ok, went shopping and after looking and much reading I bought the Nikon D5000....A bit more money but I had other lenses that would fit...It came with 2 lenses and think got a good price at Costco..It felt good in my hands and will be my first DSLR.....plus a 90 day money back if not satisfied so I can at least try it out....They had the D90 there also for about $300 more but didn't notice much difference that would matter to me at this point.....Would like get feedback if u heard good bad on this one I chose....Ty to all....

The D5000 is certainly not one I would recommend, but if you are happy with it, that is all that matters. I would suggest that you learn to shop (or at least consider) B&H and Adorama. 9 times out of 10 they are lower priced than box stores and local shops.

The reason that I would never recommend the D40/60/3000/5000 is that your choice of lenses are severely limited (if you like auto focus). They require AF-S lenses and these lenses are much more expensive versus the non AF-S. I fully understand that some people swear by these entry level cameras, but if you search through enough forums, you will find with almost 100% certainty that unhappy Nikon users use the above mentioned systems. Very rarely do you hear complaints about the D90/300/700/1/2/3 series or even the older D50/70/80 systems.

I own both - D5000 and D90, I kinda agree that there is no difference between them. More then that, I noticed that D5000's metering a little more accurate then D90's, which was actually quite a surprise to me.
The only difference between them is that on D90 your AF lenses would've had autofocus and on D5000 they won't.
