Awesome shots. I'm not sure how you did it, but they are razor sharp and nice and soft at the same time. Maybe it's the colors, or that they're lower contrast.

    Beautiful animal, great shots.

What focal length were you using?

    Regards,
    Marlo

    Really nice photos!
The first one especially, you want to pet him.
Really good DOF also, I like how the focus is just the face, nice job.

Thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated. Sometimes I hesitate to post zoo photos I know some folks don't like them

PenguinPhotoWorks: Their enclosure was very dark so I had to keep it about f3.2 max (why DOF is so short) and 1/30 at about 150mm. The lens I had was image stabilized but still had to brace myself against a wall and hold my breath at that focal length and that slow of a shutter. I'm so glad they turned out, I loved this kitty. He seemed just as interested in the crowd as we were him.

There's nothing wrong with zoo photos. The animal is there, whether or not you take its picture. And you're not trying to come off like you went to the animal's natural habitat.

You're merely doing a study of a magnificent animal- he should be photographed, he's beautiful.

    Regards,
    Marlo

Michael a beautiful animal - my favourite of the smaller big cats with tigers being my all time favourite. I agree zoos today do a lot of good in protecting species,. its not their natural environment but I like to think we are getting better in caring for them.
