Although not a scientific comparison since the shots were not taken under controlled conditions and identical exposure. I thought others might be interested in seeing these shots I took of a Paradise Tanager at the San Diego Zoo with these three different lenses. 100% crop images are available for download at the following Zenfolio gallery:

Always good to see lens comparisons - thanks for this - I am sure the Canon owners will find it useful

Thanks George. The model of the shots is getting lots of complements everywhere I've posted, and rightfully so since it is a beautiful bird. I love the reactions of people as they come into the aviary and see it for the first time, all you hear over and over again is WOW LOOK AT THAT ONE WITH THE GREEN HEAD !!!

I have to agree, the colors of this bird and the image itself are simply outstanding, well captured and processed.

    Best regards Paul

Gatorbill: I've been wondering about the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM Mark II as compared to the Mark I, and I can clearly see a difference in resolving power in the 100% crops. I have the Mark I and will not be upgrading since I'm only a serious amateur and can't float the bill. It is (at least to my eye) hard to tell the difference in sharpness between the 70-200 Mk II and the 200mm. I was expecting the 200mm prime to be much sharper in comparison. Thanks for posting these, the subject was perfect for a lens comparison.

    Hey Michael,
Yes, IMHO the 70-200mm f2.8 Mark II zoom does indeed come very-very close to the 200mm f2 prime in both IQ and performance. But I think the prime still has slightly better IQ and it's AF outperforms that of the Mark II zoom by just a little bit. The 70-200mm f2.8 Mark I is a fine lens but it falls short of the new lens in both IQ and specially AF performance. The following thread has a set of shots I took with the 200mm f2 prime:
